Indianapolis Literary Pub Crawl
Maybe it’s just me, but drinking and reading seem to go really well together. Whiskey with Hemingway and Twain. Merlot with Anne Rice. Craft beer with Hornsby. And now the Indianapolis Literary pub crawl, benefiting Indy Reads.
After learning about the Chicago Librarian Pub Crawl, but never being able to attend, Erin Cataldi and Heather Howard. Decided we needed a similar event in Indianapolis. Instead of being a librarian themed event though, they broadened it to be literary themed.
Erin and Heather didn’t want the event to be just about drinking however, they wanted to do some good as well. “A natural choice for us was Indy Reads,” said Heather, “as they are local and do such good work in our community. According to the Indiana Literacy Association, between 800,000 and 1,500,000 adults in Indiana are functionally illiterate. Just in Marion County there are 100,000 adults who read at the lowest level of literacy. Indy Reads works with adults here in central Indiana using both one-on-one and group lessons to provide basic literacy tutoring.
Aside from benefiting Indy Reads, the Indianapolis Literary Pub Crawl also has some literary themed events and prizes throughout the night. Author Dan Wakefield will be giving a short talk and doing signings at Indy Reads Books, the starting location of the pub crawl. There are also two costume contests, crawlers can dress as either a librarian or a literary character for a chance to win prizes. Don’t feel like dressing up? Prizes will also be raffled off throughout the crawl. Each crawler will get one raffle ticket by attending the crawl, and additional tickets can be purchased(cash only). Indiana Humanities is also going to be assisting with having literary events at crawl stops. The Kurt Vonnegut Memorial Library will be hosting a pre-crawl tour at 5:00pm. If you haven’t been to the Vonnegut Library, this is the perfect reason to head down and check it out.
The Indianapolis Literary Pub Crawl is still expanding, so make sure to keep an eye on their site and Facebook page for updates. Tickets are $10 in advance, or $15 at the door. But we’re also giving away a pair of tickets! Scroll to the bottom of this post to enter to win!
