DIY Sport, DIY Beer

fishersOnTapSports and beer go together. But while your major league sports have massive sponsors like Coors and Anheuser-Busch, your local sports have local beer sponsors. It makes sense. The DIY ethos of roller derby really correlates with the DIY ethos of local craft brewing. While roller derby has the motto of “For the skaters, by the skaters” craft brewers have  “We brew it. We drink it. We sell what’s left.” Not too far off really. In essence, it’s about being passionate about what you do.

The Impact on Our Team

As soon as I joined the Circle City Derby Girls, it was made very clear (first new skater workshop actually) how much time and money goes into ensuring we can play. There’s so much to pay for; stocking merchandise, bout venue, practice space, and the list goes on. One of the reasons we can afford to put on a bout is because of our sponsors.

This year, the Circle City Derby Girls beer sponsor is Flat 12 Bierwerks. They have been nothing short of fantastic. It takes a lot of work to get beer to a bout for fans to enjoy. You have to get the beer there. You have to keep it cold. You have to have someone licensed to pour it. You have to take the money. Flat 12 has handled that for us. In addition to bout day activities, they have provided complimentary beer for some of our private skater-only events.

There are lots of reasons I love craft beer. The innovative flavors the brewers develop. The relaxed atmosphere of a tasting room. The friends I’ve made while exploring the craft beer culture. And more recently, realizing the impact they have on our local community and culture.

The Impact in Our Community

While I spoke specifically about the impact Flat 12 has had on the community in regards to one local sport (I know they also at least sponsor a cycling team as well), local breweries from all over the state will be heading to Fishers next weekend (June 15) to support the Fishers Rotary Club at Fishers On Tap.

The Fishers Rotary club donates money and time to several programs around Fishers. Programs to support victims of domestic abuse, providing natural disaster relief, and youth mentoring through the high schools. At Fishers on Tap every dollar raised through donations and ticket sales stays within the community.

I hope to see you there.
