Is “pin-up” cosplay over? I hope so.

You know what I’m bored with? Cosplay that is a pin-up or an excessively sexy (as in, there’s less fabric than the SI swimsuit cover) version of something. Seriously- way to have no creativity at all. Yes, I know it takes time and crafty skill to make any costume, but every time I pull up Facebook these days it seems like some blog is featuring pin-up cosplay- Serenity, Star Wars, Avengers (any superhero really)…the list could go on forever.

I recognize your right to wear whatever you want. We’re lucky that we live in a country where we can walk around in a corset and stiletto heels, wielding a Thor hammer without too much worry. However, however pin-up cosplay is so ubiquitous these days that it’s no longer cutting edge. It’s no longer creative. It’s boring- a gimmick for attention that works, but hopefully not for much longer. What I love about cosplay is the display of creativity, new ideas and interpretations of characters that don’t revolve around an excessive display of boobs. Come on ladies. You’re classier than that.

So lets focus on creativity and costuming prowess. Let’s try look sexy and fun by working our asses off on an awesome costume, not by resorting to cheap gimmicks. We’re better than that.
