In Defence of DC’s Media Strategy

I’m not an avid comic book reader. I read some Supergirl in middle school and high school, some Spider-Man when the movies came out, and a few video game tie-ins. I’m starting to get more into them with the New 52 giving me a place to actually start. But overall, I’m what you’d call a casual fan. And as a casual fan, I love the way DC is handling their universe.

We can all agree that the Marvel Cinematic Universe is amazing. But for me, it’s too much work. There’s the movies, which all tie together, and then those movies tie into Agents of Shield. And with Age of Ultron, you had to see the movie opening week to keep know what was going on with Agents of Shield. For a casual fan like myself, it’s too much to keep up with.

On the DC side, you have little mini-universes. There’s Gotham, the CW shows, Supergirl (which is awful and I pretend does not exist), and the movies. They are not connected at all. This is great for me. I absolutely love the CW shows, and am looking forward to Legends of Tomorrow. Gotham is amazing, and I like that I don’t have to keep up with Gotham to keep up with Arrow and The Flash. I don’t see a lot of movies, and appreciate that I don’t have to start in order to know what’s going on with some of my favorite TV shows.

That’s why I don’t think this strategy is awful. I don’t have to work at it like I do with Marvel. These smaller universes allow me to only watch what I want without having to stress out about time lines and keeping up. As a casual fan, that is a surefire way to make sure I’m watching every week. And keeping the casual fans interested is how shows stay on the air.
