Cereal Review: Chocolate Toast Crunch
For my money, Cinnamon Toast Crunch has always been the pinnacle of breakfast cereal perfection. It’s great in milk. It’s great dry. The last bits at the bottom of the bowl that have gotten soggy are amazing. The cinnamon-flavored milk when you’re done is the taste of victory (of a not so well-balanced breakfast)!
When flipping through this weeks’s grocery ads, I noticed that General Mills is attempting to improve upon Cinnamon Toast Crunch by introducing Chocolate Toast Crunch. While skeptical, this box of cereal was possibly the easiest impulse buy I’ve ever made. Holding this box in my hands, I had only one real question: Is it possible to improve upon breakfast cereal perfection? I’d need a bowl, a spoon and some milk to find out!
Cinnamon Toast Crunch is a wheat square covered in cinnamon and sugar. Chocolate Toast Crunch’s wheat squares look dyed, as they are completely brown, having none of the natural color of the wheat square. The chocolaty taste is slightly overbearing, possibly leaning on the fake side, but thankfully not tasting bad. It is good both dry and in milk. The soggy, bottom of the bowl pieces always stand up strong, just like Cinnamon Toast Crunch.
The milk leftover when you’re done with the actual cereal is the one place where Chocolate Toast Crunch falls a little short. While it tastes ok, it’s not quite as strong or tasty as a regular glass of chocolate milk made with syrup. In this aspect, Cinnamon Toast Crunch’s milk is far superior, having a strong, and more unique taste to it, as mixing cinnamon with milk is something I don’t think I’ve ever done on it’s own, only in cereal form.
At the end of my taste test, I’ve come to the conclusion that Chocolate Toast Crunch does not dethrone Cinnamon Toast Crunch as the breakfast cereal king. However, this might not be it’s true intention. Having the best cereal every day would make it less special. Variety is the spice of life, and having Chocolate Toast Crunch as another choice can make me appreciate both cereals more. Definitely pick yourself up a box and give it a go!
