Advance Review: 22 Jump Street Delivers Serious Laughs
NOTE: Spoiler-free review!
For quite some time now, rebooting old movies and tv shows has been all the rage. For the most part, I think they miss much more often than they hit. 21 Jump Street shocked me at how funny it ended up being. The sequel, 22 Jump Street, delivers just as much, if not more comedy than the first.
From the trailers, they make it very clear that the joke of the movie is they’re doing the same thing as in the first movie. Only this time, they’re too old for high school (as if they weren’t two years ago), so now they’re going under cover in college.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have amazing comedic chemistry, it’s as simple as that. When those two were on screen together, I was almost always laughing, and so was the rest of the theater. Surrounded by a funny supporting cast including Nick Offerman and Ice Cube, the laughs rarely stop. There’s also a few well-placed cameos that I won’t spoil for you. However, since they’re relatively unknowns still, I will say keep your eyes on the Lucas Brothers. Those twins are absolutely HYSTERICAL!
One of the funniest parts of the movie is the end credits, where they show some truly ridiculous things that I don’t want to give away. Finally, there is about a 10-second post-credit stinger that made me chuckle, but don’t feel bad if you decide not to sit through the 4 or 5 minute credit roll to see it.
I definitely recommend checking 22 Jump Street out when it hits theaters this Friday, June 13th. If you’re looking to cool off for a couple hours on a hot summer day and get in some serious laughs, this movie should be on your radar.
