Confession: Comic books have never been something that I’ve really gotten into. I had a few Supergirl, Spider-Girl, and Wonder Woman comics in high school, but that was about it. They were fun, but they really didn’t do anything for me.
Recently, though, I’ve had the desire to try again. I’ve become aware of the breadth of topics and genres that comic books can cover. Plus, as it turns out, some of my fandoms have their own comics. Which certainly motivates me to pick some up.
Picking a Title
Mass Effect is one of my major fandoms at this point, and I’ve been feeling a bit bummed since I finished the third game. So getting a chance to continue the story was really appealing to me. The comic was actually a three in one. It also contained R.I.P.D (a police department to protect the living from the dead), and The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys (based around the My Chemical Romance album of the same name). If you were trying to get me to read comic books Dark Horse, well played.
What I Thought
The Mass Effect comic was short, but good. The story stayed true to the characters, and I don’t feel it gave away anything if you hadn’t read the other comics or played the games. It didn’t get me hooked, but it’s definitely something I’ll be looking at pursuing.
R.I.P.D was alright, but it just wasn’t something I was into. However, The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys I found very interesting. I love the album because of the story it builds, so getting more of the story awesome for me.
Where Do I Go From Here?
My friends have recommended a handful of titles, Atomic Robo and Y: The Last Man for example. While I start on my journey, is there anything you think I should check out?
